About us

The arts education and arts research have a long tradition at Southeast University. Mr. Li Rui-qing, when served the post of president of the university, actively promoted aesthetic and arts education. As early as the beginning of the twentieth century, he established a branch of painting and handicraft teaching, which was the earliest arts education in modern China. In the century-old history, many masters of arts taught at Southeast University, such as Li Shu-tong, the famous music educator; Wu-Mei, a specialist in Chinese opera and education, the great artists Zong Bai-hua and Lǔ Feng-zi, and some other famous figures such as Cheng Zhi-fo, Xu Bei-hong, Fu Bao-shi, Wu Zuo-ren. Thanks to them, Southeast University was enriched with pronounced artistic ambience and established itself as a national center arts study and arts education.

Department of Arts Study and The Center of Modern Art and Design were established at Southeast University in the 1990s. Both of them were merged into the School of Arts in September 2006. Its present dean, Professor Wang Tingxin, a senior professor of Arts Study, is a renowned Arts theorist.
 
The first PhD degree program of arts study was established at The School of Arts at Southeast University in China. Our School respectively received a master's and doctor's degree awarding entitlement in 1996 and 1998.In the key discipline review of Jiangsu Province which occurs once every five years, our Discipline of Arts Study was twice designated as the key discipline in its field from the period of the 10th five-year plan to the 11th five-year plan. It was added to the list as one of the national key disciplines by the Ministry of Education in 2007. Education quality assessment released by China Academic Degrees and Graduate Education Development Center (CDGDC, authoritative institution in China) showed that the graduate education of our school ranked third in China in 2008. Theories of Arts Study discipline was rated as Jiangsu provincial level key discipline in 2011. Discipline quality assessment issued by CDGDC declared it took first place in China in 2012. The School of Arts assembles an array of eminent Chinese and foreign artists and arts educators. It now has 15 professors and 21 associate professors, among whom 1 is member of the group of Arts Study discipline of Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council in China, 8 are members of the group of Arts Study discipline of National Teaching Guidance Committee of China, and 10 are doctoral advisors.
 
The School now consists of three departments and some research centers and institutions, they are Department of Animation, Department of Design, and Department of Fine Arts, Research Center for Arts Study, Research Center for Creative Arts, Folk Arts Research Center, Research Institute of Chinese calligraphy, Opera Novels Institute, Institute of Oriental Culture, Institute of Cultural Industry and other academic research institutions.
 
Being a specialized agency of arts education and research, our School offers degree programs from undergraduate to Ph. D besides. It has the authorities to launch Ph. D Program of first-class disciplines in Theories of Arts Study and MA Programs of first-class disciplines in Fine Arts and Design besides a MFA (Master of Fine Arts) Program. At the level of undergraduate education, there are three BA programs: Industrial Design, Animation, and Fine arts.
 
At present, the School of Arts has grown into one of the most important bases of arts education and research in China. In the future, the School of Arts will inherit excellent education and research tradition; and implement open education and research policy. We are looking forward to collaborating with more well-known domestic and foreign universities, research institutes and cultural enterprises and institutions of arts and culture all over the world in the field of arts education and research.
